Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay, is the capital city of Maharashtra and is situated on the west coast of India. Mumbai boasts iconic landmarks such as the Gateway of India, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Marine Drive, and Haji Ali Dargah. The Ajanta Caves are a complex of Buddhist cave temples carved into the rock face of a horseshoe-shaped gorge along the Waghora River. They date back to the 2nd century BCE to the 6th century CE. There are around 30 caves at Ajanta, including prayer halls, monasteries, and chaityas (shrines). The cave paintings depict the life of Buddha, Jataka tales, and various other narratives. The Ellora Caves are a complex of rock-cut temples and monasteries that represent a blend of Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain religious architecture and art. They were constructed from the 6th century CE to the 9th century CE. Architectural Diversity: Ellora consists of 34 caves, with each cave dedicated to a specific deity or religious order. The Kailasa Temple, a monolithic structure dedicated to Lord Shiva, is a highlight and one of the most impressive rock-cut temples in the world.
